87 Deities

Die Papierschnittarbeit nimmt Bezug auf ein berühmtes Fresko aus dem Yongle-Tempel in der chinesischen Provinz Shanxi. (Die Vorlage stammt von Wu Zong Yuan aus der Song-Dynastie, angefertigt mit einer speziellen chinesischen Zeichentechnik). Sie zeigt Donghua Dijun und Nanxi Dijun und 85 weitere Gottheiten in einer Prozession zum höchsten Gott Yuanshi Tianzun. Bei der verwendeten Methode entstehen die Objektformen dadurch, dass Formen und Strukturen entweder aus dem Bild entfernt werden („Yin“) oder erhalten („Yang“) bleiben. Alle 87 Figuren sind im Ausdruck unterschiedlich. Das Yin- und das Yang-Prinzip werden nahtlos miteinander verwoben und lassen so die Essenz des Originals erkennen.

This is a hand-carved picture scroll of a famous mural located in the Yongle Palace in Shanxi Province, China. (Legend has it that the mural was illustrated by Wu Zong Yuan from the Song Dynasty using a Chinese tracing method). It depicts Donghua Dijun and Nanxi Dijun leading 85 other deities to pay their respects to Yuanshi Tianzun, the Primeval Lord of Heaven. Using a hand-carving method, a shape is either carefully removed from the picture (the “yin” method) or kept in the scroll (the “yang” method) to form specific objects. All 87 deities exhibit different expressions. These two methods are interwoven flawlessly to help transcend the essence of the original painting.
